Save the kiwi bird!

Since I consider myself part kiwi by marriage (I married a handsome kiwi bloke in March), I wanted to let you know that New Zealand's national icon, the kiwi bird, is in danger. If you have never heard of the kiwi bird, they are a very interesting bird. They are kind of an evolutionary mystery - a biological riddle. They barely have wings and cannot fly. They have no tails. They have extremely strong hind legs and will stomp the ground like a rabbit. Once bonded, a male and female kiwi bird live out their lives in monogamy. They are nearly blind, and only lay one egg each year. And despite all of this, they have survived for millions of years. Read full post...

The Cove - Shallow Water. Deep Secret.

I saw this movie a few days ago and I could not take my eyes off the screen, this movie is captivating. Three days later, I am still thinking about it and talking about it. It's a thriller that will make you cry, make you scream, and leave you in disbelief. And if you are anything like me, it will make you want to get on a plane to join the fight. It's the story of a little town with a big dirty secret that they did not want anyone to see. The dedication and bravery that it took for these filmmakers to make this film is nothing short of incredible. My hats off to each and every one of them, I would like to shake all their hands.

WTF Are These Yellow Books On My Doorstep?

So I am leaving my house the other day and on my doorstep I find two of these big yellow books with hundreds of pages of phone numbers and addresses. Someone apparently just left them there for me, as if by having a doorstep I had somehow implied that I wanted them. Has anyone seen them before? Do you know what they are? They appear to be some sort of google search/information service in book format. And it has basically every phone number and address in the state. Strange, why would I need a list of every phone number in the state? I am kind of annoyed about it because they are taking up a lot of room in my paper recycling box.

Update - Someone just emailed me and told me these are called "PHONE BOOKS." Apparently it's some sort of prehistoric way of finding phone numbers. Are there really still people out there without the internet that cannot simply google the information they need? Do we really need a company out there cutting down trees to make paper, using tons of ink to print thousands of phone numbers in the tiniest font in the history of writing Read full post...

Super Cool People That Were Veggies

My friends over at Treehugger recently posted a slideshow of 13 Great Vegetarians from history - people like Ghandi, Da Vinci, Einstein, Voltaire, Plato, etc. There are a bunch of good ones that were left out like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Vincent Van Gogh. I have a bunch of veggie life promoting quotes on my racing site from some of these super cool, super smart veggies.

True, we veggies may be in a bit of a bind should we wind up stranded in the wilderness. Everytime I see Bear Grylls eating insects on Man Vs. Wild, I think... man, I would be done for. I must hand it to him, however... that is one man on tv that earns every single penny of his paycheck. I just can't figure out how his wife can kiss him after knowing what has been in his mouth. Yuk.
